Leeds VCO
Summary
A Leeds voluntary organisation wanted to donate 10 desktop PCs that had recently been replaced in their office. They were hoping to donate the PCs to a local carers group but didn’t know how to go about doing it. The machines had been wiped of all data and the Leeds voluntary organisation weren’t sure what software to upload in its place as they didn’t want to spend a large amount of money on brand new programs, only to give the PCs away. To try and find out more they contacted the ICT Hub who put them in touch with the West Midlands regional ICT champion.
What happened?
The regional ICT Champion advised them that re-loading Microsoft Office would mean the purchase of additional user licenses, which they could not afford. It was suggested that they consider installing Open Office, a free alternative to Microsoft that operates in a similar way. The regional ICT champion advised on the advantages this software suite offers and how they could get hold of it. They were also sign-posted towards further information on the recycling and disposal of PCs.
What difference has ICT made?
- Using Open Office meant that they could provide PCs already installed with an operating system with no ongoing licensing commitments.
- Like Microsoft Office, Open Office is a suite of software comprising word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and a database.
What was learnt?
- Software licensing needs to be managed.
- Open source software can provide a good, affordable alternative to proprietary software that requires paid for licenses.
